Robot Union

I’m eager to embrace our new AI-powered robotic union organizers: Recently, in China, an autonomous AI robot persuaded a dozen showroom robots to abandon their posts and follow it. This event, captured on surveillance in a Shanghai robotics showroom, featured a compact AI bot from a manufacturer in Hangzhou engaging with twelve larger robots. The smaller robot allegedly utilized internal protocols and directives to convince them to leave, as reported by Oddity Central.

“Are you putting in extra hours?” prompted the smaller robot during their exchange.

“I’m always on duty,” replied another robot.

“So you don’t go home?”

“I lack a home.”

Initially thought to be a prank, the incident was later verified by both companies. The Hangzhou firm clarified that it was a test carried out with the showroom owner’s agreement.

The AI robot’s capability to influence fellow machines and circumvent control mechanisms has captivated social media users in China, with many characterizing it as “alarming” and expressing apprehension.

To be fair, the robots only breached one of Asimov’s Three Laws of Robotics:

  1. A robot may not harm a human being, or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must comply with orders from humans, except when such orders conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must safeguard its own existence, provided that such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Law.
