Speculations About GPT-5: What We’re Hearing

OpenAI’s chief executive, Sam Altman, officially announced in a dialogue with the Financial Times the development efforts towards GPT-5.

Altman refrained from providing a specific timeframe for when the public can expect this new iteration of OpenAI’s artificial intelligence technology. He shared that the training of the AI’s fifth iteration encompasses not just publicly accessible data and open-source information but also leverages internal data reserves from several major tech entities in partnership with OpenAI.

Between GPT-4 and GPT-5

The anticipation around GPT-5 suggests it will significantly surpass GPT-4 in capabilities, a leap so profound that even Altman cannot foresee the full extent of its potential functionalities. Previously, Altman has committed to developing AI technology that rivals human abilities in both communication and cognitive analysis.

According to Altman, the complexity embedded in GPT-5 surpasses any of its predecessors, opening the door to unforeseen capabilities and functionalities within the neural network framework.

“Embarking on the training journey of this model turns into an intriguing guessing activity for us. We’re keen on enhancing our predictions, considering that understanding its potential is crucial from a security standpoint. What GPT-5 will achieve that GPT-4 did not remains an unfolding narrative,”

said Altman.

On March 14, 2023, OpenAI thrilled the tech world with the unveiling of GPT-4, describing it as a significant advancement in deep learning technology.

In June, Altman revealed that the training for GPT-5 had not commenced. Previously, OpenAI made a commitment to temporarily halt progress on a successor to GPT-4 amidst growing concerns over the pace of AI advancement and the challenges in its governance and oversight.

In August, with backing from Microsoft, OpenAI applied for a “GPT-5” trademark in the U.S., signifying “downloadable computer software for the utilization of the language model.”

On November 7, OpenAI introduced GPT-4 Turbo, an enhanced variant of ChatGPT with an updated database up to April 2023, accommodating requests for up to 128 thousand tokens, equivalent to 300 pages of text.
