Towards the start of December, an insider known as “Jimmy Apples” dropped clues on platform X regarding a likely unveiling of GPT-4.5 by month’s end. Subsequent feedback from users has revealed that ChatGPT now associates itself with the moniker “gpt-4.5-turbo.” Yet, when questioned about the specific distinctions between “gpt-4.5-turbo” and the earlier version “gpt-4.0-turbo,” the responses remain ambiguously rooted in April 2023 insights, hinting at potential misunderstandings.
OpenAI has a history of launching ‘turbo’ iterations subsequent to their original models, exemplified by GPT-3.5 and GPT-4, which makes the rapid arrival of a GPT-4.5 turbo version stand out as unusual.
A snapshot from mid-December portrayed GPT-4.5 as capable of handling audio, video, 3D, text, and images, boasting improved logic solving and cross-modal functionalities. However, skepticism arises due to an absent arrow in the snapshot’s link, questioning its legitimacy.
The premature reveal of GPT-4-Turbo through a pricing table on a website was later refuted as inauthentic by OpenAI’s Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman. This, however, does not eliminate the potential reality of a GPT-4.5 Turbo, consistent with the continuous rumors surrounding OpenAI’s progress in AI technologies.
Embarking on Multimodal Frontiers
In a statement during March, Microsoft Germany’s Chief Technical Officer Andreas Braun highlighted OpenAI’s shift towards multimodal models with video generation abilities. This directly correlates with the “Project Arrakis” spill, promising not only video creation capabilities but also enhanced effectiveness, which could integrate into Project Gobi. This initiative is aimed at conceptualizing future models like GPT-4.5 or GPT-5, potentially set for an early 2024 debut.
